Where are you from, and how did you become a Tuumster?
I am originally from Kuusalu but moved to Tallinn for my Marketing studies at the Tallinn School of Economics. My professional journey began at the Estonian Football Association, but I soon transitioned to a dynamic role in a small firm, focusing on photo, video, content production, and social media marketing. While there, I decided to enhance my knowledge, pursuing a degree in Business and Experience Management, which I proudly completed with cum laude honours. My thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there; I delved into IT, studying analysis and design of information systems at the IT college, which I also graduated cum laude, by some luck and determination
During this educational phase, I left my previous company and began as a tester at Swedbank. I was a blank canvas when I started. After 6 months, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed me to work remotely, resulting in a way of working which was a bit too solitary for my liking. Here at Tuum, it’s a whole different ball game. We’ve celebrated New Year’s and Estonia’s Independence Day together not to mention other smaller gatherings and team events. The camaraderie is undeniable.
My colleague, Piia-Helin, saw potential in me and nudged me to apply to Tuum. And, well, here I am today!
What do you do at Tuum?
In jest, I say that I test my colleagues’ patience. But in essence, my role revolves around identifying vulnerabilities — trying to “break” things — and introducing automation wherever feasible. What’s refreshing about Tuum is the receptive mindset. Colleagues appreciate constructive feedback. One developer even mentioned how having QA engineers on board challenges them to be better at their craft, pushing boundaries and elevating the quality of their work.
I’m passionate about my role. While I remain open to new opportunities, potentially in development, I’m confident I’m in the right sector.
How do you envision the future of QA engineering in the next 3 years?
Reflecting on the transformations over my three years in testing, the landscape is evolving rapidly. Companies adopt diverse methodologies — while some are at the cutting edge of innovation, others remain bound to legacy systems. The trajectory, though, leans heavily towards increased automation, aiming to mitigate human error and expedite problem detection.
Would you prefer dealing with multiple small software bugs or a single massive one?
In the testing phase, I’d prefer to tackle one large bug — definitely not in a live production scenario! However, there’s an undeniable thrill in discovering glitches periodically, even if developers might not share the same enthusiasm.
In essence, I relish uncovering both minor and major bugs.
Tell us more about your passion for motorcycles.
My intrigue began at the age of 12 during the Jõgevatreff parade where I got to ride my moped amidst grand motorcycles — a cherished memory from 2006. Over the years, I owned several bikes, one of the most memorable being ATM, a knock-off of the famous Honda Monkey. Riding was more than just a hobby, it was a practical means. I used it mainly to get to school and other places, and many of my friends did the same.
Did you ever watch “Biker Mice from Mars”?
Of course! In my hometown, people jokingly called our gang “Biker Mice.” Some didn’t like our loud rides, but we loved every moment of it!
Which track would be your go-to when you are driving your motorcycle?
While I cherish listening to music during rides, I find that the ambient noises somewhat diminish the experience. It’s serene when you’re enveloped in the silence, focusing solely on the ride. However, if I had to select a genre, liquid DnB would be my pick due to its rhythmic tempo without overly distracting lyrics.
Is there a unique item on your bucket list that you’re eager to tick off?
I’d first want an actual bucket for the list! On a serious note, I’m keen on operating a tram. Over the years, I’ve maneuvered a myriad of vehicles, from limousines to boats. As I do not drink alcohol, I often find myself behind the wheel, exploring exciting machines and nice cars.
