Business Development Representative — I build relationships with potential customers, analyse their needs, understand what their projects are all about and eventually partner up with them.
Tell us a bit about your background and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been passionate about travelling and experiencing new cultures. I’m currently based in Berlin, in my home country of Germany, but am fortunate to have lived all over the world; in Europe, the US, South America and South-East Asia. My love of travel has also had a big influence on my career path, which began in international logistics and led to me studying emerging markets whilst living in Lima.
More recently, I worked for a consultancy in core banking which is where I became excited about the fintech industry and the transformational quality of the work involved. This was definitely influential for me when making the next step in my career path which brought me to Modularbank.
How did you come to work at Modularbank?
I applied for the position at Modularbank on a whim after coming across the advertisement on LinkedIn. After having my first and second interviews, I knew this was a company I would like to work for, not just because I was intrigued by the role but also because I immediately gelled with my interviewers and could tell this was a company culture I wanted to be a part of. I was also particularly excited about the opportunity to visit Tallinn, which I knew so little about but has since become one of my favourite cities!
The opportunity to work at Modularbank was inspiring for me as I have been able to join an international company in its infancy which is building new technology from the ground up.
What has your experience been like working at Modularbank? Any standout moments?
I was immediately made to feel welcome at Modularbank, it sounds cliché but the people here really make the company a great place to work. Professionally, I have found Modularbank to be very supportive of my career development in that I have been given the opportunity to grow in multiple paths of my choosing. I am also appreciative of the trust the company places in me; I am encouraged to work on my own initiative and never feel stifled in my role. As a business development representative, I am also able to do what I love, which is sales, communicating and connecting with people.
My onboarding week was a bit wild — it ended with the sales team going skinny dipping in a bog which was definitely a unique team-building experience. Another standout moment was definitely the summer party we had which took place on an island off of Estonia!
How would you describe your team at Modularbank?
I’m really fortunate to work with a great team of intelligent, creative people at Modularbank and what really stood out to me is the diversity of professional and cultural backgrounds there are in the company — in our Berlin office alone, we have 12 employees from 9 different nationalities. The fact that my team consists of such a variety of backgrounds is definitely a huge plus; it creates an exciting environment where everyone is constantly learning from one another, meaning I’ve been able to pick up loads of new skills whilst also sharing some of my own experience.
One piece of advice I would give to anyone joining Modularbank is to not be afraid to ask questions, everyone at Modularbank is super open to helping you.
Outside of work, what do you like to do in your free time?
I love sports and basically anything outdoors. I enjoy surfing (although I have a fear of deep water), biking, swimming, going to the gym, but also really love team sports such as football and rugby. I have played rugby competitively in Germany, Peru and the US — something that really stands out for me is the camaraderie that seems to be ingrained in rugby culture, no matter where I play. I’m also going skiing for the first time this year, which I’m really excited about!
To relax, I usually read. My favourite book is one called Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss, a former chief negotiator for the FBI, which explores the high-stakes negotiation techniques he has perfected throughout his career and how these principles can be used to your advantage in everyday life.
Finally, where is next on your list of places to travel to?
Once coronavirus restrictions can be safely lifted I would love to visit Taiwan, as I’ve been told it’s an incredibly beautiful country. I’m keen to explore the island, but am particularly interested in taking my surfboard to some of their famous surfing locations.
